U.S. Delists Syria as a State Sponsor of Terrorism
Published on: Tuesday 25 August 2026
The U.S. delisted Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday, eliminating what Damascus calls the last major obstacle to international investment. Syria had been on the list since 1979, after Washington accused Hafez al-Assadâs government of backing militant groups. The designation stayed in place under his son Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in December 2024 by rebels led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is now Syriaâs president. Cuba, Iran and North Korea remain on the U.S. list of state sponsors
